Lutenklang
Lutenklang — literally “sound of lutes” in German — is a Houston-based ensemble dedicated to the music of the Medieval and Renaissance periods. We perform music written for real life: for worship, for celebration, for dancing, and for telling stories about love, loss, and everything in between.
This music was never meant to sit behind glass. The notes were written down, but many details — how fast, how loud, which instruments — were left to the performers. Early musicians weren’t just interpreters; they were collaborators, shaping the music in the moment. That spirit of creativity and flexibility is still very much alive in what we do.
We perform quarterly concerts in intimate venues around Houston, and we welcome you to join us — to listen, to ask questions, and yes, to dance.
Future Performances
Lutenklang performs multiple times a year, each program built around a theme. Past and future themes include love, the seasons, sacred music, and the sounds of specific times and places — a medieval court, a Renaissance city, a village feast day.
Our concerts are casual and participatory. We introduce the instruments, explain the music, and invite questions and conversation after each performance. First-time listeners are as welcome as seasoned early music enthusiasts.
